South African Standards

How the APS Score Works

The Admission Point Score (APS) is the standardized method used by South African universities to evaluate grade 12 learners for admission. Every university has its own minimum requirements, but the calculation method is generally consistent.

1

The 7-Point Scale

Each subject percentage is converted into a point from 1 to 7. For example, 80-100% = 7 points, 70-79% = 6 points, and so on.

2

The "Top 6" Rule

Universities typically sum your top 6 subjects. Life Orientation is the most common exclusion from this calculation.

3

Subject-Specific Requirements

Simply meeting the APS is often not enough. Many courses (like Engineering or Medicine) require specific minimum marks in Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Life Orientation included in my APS?

Most universities (like UP, Wits, and UJ) exclude Life Orientation from the core APS calculation. However, some private colleges and specific institutions may include it at half-weight. Our calculator follows the standard Top-6 exclusion rule.

What is the minimum APS for University?

While a Bachelor Pass requires an APS of 23+, most competitive degrees require between 28 and 40+ points. Always aim for at least 5 points above the minimum to increase your chances.

Does Mathematical Literacy affect my options?

Yes. Many STEM, Commerce, and Health Science degrees strictly require Pure Mathematics. Taking Math Lit may limit your options to Humanities, Arts, and certain Law or Hospitality courses.

Can I use my Grade 11 marks for application?

Yes! Most South African universities use your final Grade 11 results for provisional admission. Once you receive your final Matric results, your admission is then confirmed.
